Week in Review
Social Studies
Need some dinner conversation starters? Ask your students about the following ideas that we explored in social studies this week. I hope you conversations are as lively as ours were!
- The Preamble first three words are WE THE PEOPLE....Why are these three words so important?
- What does "consent to govern" mean?
- How do American show that they "consent to be governed" under the Constitution?
- What does establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defense mean?
Writing/Reading
This week we had a chance to revise our reflective writing pieces. Students took time to revise their pieces based on my feedback. We discussed the importance of editing (correcting spelling, fixing writing convention errors and carefully editing for clarity i.e. missing word, wrong word) AND revising, defined as expanding ideas, adding description and depth. This year I hope to instill in your children the importance of the editing and revision process, not only as a way to polish their writing, but to make honing in and more closely looking at ones writing a habitual part what good writers do.
We began our November edition of StoryWorks. We continue to practice accurate and careful reading skills to more deeply understand what we read and responding to the information in the articles through written response questions.
Math
Fractions, Fractions, Fractions!
We began chapter three this week! We were busy. Many of the ideas in the chapter opener were only briefly discussed in fourth grade, so we made sure to spend plenty of time reviewing and learning these skills. This week we discussed Like and Unlike Fractions, Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers, Prime and Composite Numbers, Fraction Equivalency, Simplification of Fractions and adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators...PHEW, did you get all that? I told you it was a busy five days!
PLEASE continue to remind your child to slow down and to check their math homework for small errors. Math homework is an important component of solidifying understanding and it is vital that students are taking their time on the nightly math homework.
