Week Two...That's A Wrap!

Dear Families,

It was another great week in fifth grade. Your students continue to catch on to new fifth grade routines and are making a smooth transition to being the oldest kids on campus!

We have been busy with big numbers in math and expanding our descriptive writing skills, while working on our "I Am From" poems ( Look for these in the hallways on Back to School Night)!!

Your children will be coming home with their newly painted masks this weekend Their homework is to decorate the masks, making them uniquely theirs and return  them to school NO LATER THEN Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 9TH.

Next week we will launch our first science unit....ENERGY!

At the end of last week, we finished our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division fact checks. Student now know what operation they will be working to master in the coming weeks. We like students to have a 95% accuracy rate before we move them on to the next level or operation. It is very important that students master their multiplications facts 1-12 as soon as possible. Being able to quickly and accurately recall these facts will greatly add to their success with our math curriculum. We will do monthly fact checks at school, but practicing needs to be done at HOME!

Some Practice Tips

  • Spend 10 minutes, three days a week on fact practice. Flash card decks are easy and convenient.
  • Think about going through a deck at the breakfast table, in the car on the way to school or waiting for a sports practice to start!
  • There are great sites on the web for math fact practice, look around for a few that interest your child and allow them on the site for fact practice.
  • Your are welcome to print off the fact practice pages I have on the blog. These can be found under the Learning Resource Tab.

I am really hoping to see all of you at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 11th from 5:30-8:45. This is a great chance for you to hear more about fifth grade and to get to know me a bit better. If you are not able to attend, I will send you the presentation link, upon request.

Warmly,
Maia
