Welcome to Fifth Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade

August 2013

Dear ALMOST Fifth Graders,

During these last few weeks of summer, I am ALWAYS shocked that the hot, humid, sun filled days of summer are winding down. In June, as we finish out the school year, the summer months seem long and luxurious, but no matter what, they seem to fly by. I really enjoyed my summer and did many things. I spent time enjoying Minneapolis, traveled and spent time with my family. Here are a few highlights:

  • welcomed friends to MPLS, showed off our great city!
  • worked in the garden
  • visited family and friends in California
  • went paddle boarding in Lake Harriet
  • spent hours at the neighborhood park with my son, Adrian
  • learned ALOT about our new math program
  • took many bike rides
I am very eager to hear all about your summer, so make sure to have a few highlights to share with me on the first day of school and because we know summer does end, here are a few details to take care of before school starts:

Bring just 3 items on the first day of school: book, a backpack, and your completed homework assignment.

Survey and Reflection: the survey is for the students and the reflection is for the adults.  Students, please complete your survey thoughtfully and bring it on the very first day of school. It will help me get to know you better. Adults, please read the letter addressed to you and consider completing the reflection as soon as possible. Copies of the survey and reflection can be found in the "Fifth Grade Basics" folder for download.

What to have at home: school supplies for completing homework. Make sure your computer and printer are working.

Please bookmark our classroom blog before school begins.
This letter, summer homework forms, and some pictures from my summer are available on my blog. I update the site every week; that’s where you will find important and interesting class information, announcements, and photos all year long.

I am super excited about the year ahead, about getting to know you and learning together!

Best,
Ms. Poling

Advice from Former Fifth Graders

Last May, as my former fifth graders were finishing up the year, I asked them if they were to do fifth grade over again, knowing what they know now, what advice would they give fifth graders starting the journey. Here are a few of their thoughts.......

  • Have Fun, fifth grade is the BEST year.
  • Do your homework!
  • Listen to the teacher, things move fast!
  • Try to make new friends, it is good practice for middle school.
  • Enjoy the play, no matter what part you get.
  • Write in your planner or else you WILL forget when you get home.
Believe it or not, you will be giving advice to incoming fifth grader before you know, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, we still have a fantastic journey ahead of us. I cannot wait!
