Weekly Notes

IMPORTANT LEGACY DAY ANNOUNCEMENT

If you plan to pick your child up at the BC campus tomorrow after Legacy Day, we MUST have a note stating this. You may pick your child up at 2:40 in front of "spirit" rock, the large rock between the ice arena and Aamoth Stadium. Any student who does not have a note, will come with us back on the bus to HC

The students were told this morning that if they plan on painting their faces or using colored hair spray to demonstrate Blake school spirit tomorrow, that all bodily adornment must be done at home! Please do not let you child come to school tomorrow with face paint or colored hair spray.

Tomorrow's weather looks to be taking a sharp turn towards true fall and with a possibility of rain, most of the events tomorrow will take place indoors, however, please have your child dress warmly for what looks to be a chilly day.

Science
In science we looked more closely at heat energy and how heat is transferred from one object to another. Students were excellent date collectors as they watched the temperatures change when placing a bag of hot water into a bucket of ice water. It took some convincing that the hot water bag was the one with heat energy and therefore, heat energy was moving from the hot water bag to the cool water tub, not the other way around! We also watched butter melt, beginning to understanding what heat conductors are and how certain materials are better or worse conductors or heat. Next week we will work on our last science project/experiment of the unit; "Building a Better Water Bottle, " stayed tuned for the outcomes!

Math
DIVISION....Yippie! We worked hard this week to divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. Using our understanding of multiplication to see the inverse relationship between these operations.
Students continued to work on estimating large numbers to help them find reasonable answers and worked to break numbers apart when dividing. These are all skills that build up to using the US algorithm for long division, which we will be learning next week. This skill takes a lot of practice, you should be seeing many long division problems coming home for homework. Encourage your mathematicians to SLOW down, rushing through the various steps will cause inaccuracy!

Word Work/ Mega Words- Now that keyboarding has wrapped up we are able to spend time on spelling, grammar and writing conventions. WE WILL BEGIN AFTER CONFERENCES. You may have noticed theMegaWords Two book on your kitchen table. We will be using this book, as well as other resources and curricula to become better spellers, more accurate writers and vocabulary stars!
