READING
We finished reading Regarding The Fountain. For our final project, students were asked to create their ideal fountain designs from the ideas they shared in their "Letter To Flo" writing pieces. The designs are fantastic, now if only we could make room for these extravagant masterpieces here at HC!

MATH
We are knee deep in DIVISION. After introducing the students to several strategies, we are now asking them to pick the one they like best! We will continue to practice this important skill, as exposure to the process many times is important for mastery.

Make sure to check out some great new math resources under the "Learning Resource" tab on the blog. There are some AMAZING videos Mrs. Robie made to help with division, along with tips on how to most effectively and efficiently study math facts!

After conferences we will begin learning about Order of Operations!

SCIENCE
We are energy experts! Keeping warm in the winter ( insulators), harnessing heats energy for cooking ( conductors), understanding the energy transfers that take place to make simple machines work.... Check, Check and Check. This week we finished up our last experiments and lessons of study. Beginning next week through the first part of the week following conferences (10/20, 10/21) we will begin learning how to study for science test in fifth grade, as we gear up for our Energy Unit test on October 22nd.

WRITING
This week we began our first reflective writing piece of the school year.  Our first reflective writing topic is a piece titled " What We Love". We discussed in detail the four components of the writing process, complete with a wonderful document outlining what BRAINSTORMING, DRAFTING, EDITING AND REVISING mean. Please check out your student's great ideas The Writing Process

These writing assignments will among other things, focus on crafting interesting and powerful topic sentences, expressing ideas in complete and thorough sentences with supporting details, organizing ideas sequentially and cohesively, and writing strong concluding sentences. Students will also be editing their writing following basic fifth grade writing convention expectations. Fifth Grade Writing Conventions
