Week in Review

Math- We worked hard this week on learning the US algorithm for multiplication. I was able to work with each student this week, talking though this skill, seeing and understanding where they are and supporting them as they continue to work on mastering this important skill. We ended the week with an introduction to 3 and 4-digit numbers multiplied by 2- digit numbers. Next week we will be working on DIVISION!

In your student's Friday Folder you will see a slip of paper which indication whether you student is working on multiplication or division facts, multiplication or division multiples. Some students may have specific fact families they should be focusing on, with a practice page included. PLEASE continue to support your child as they practice!

Science- We took a step back this week and spent time reviewing the first six chapters in our energy unit. We spent time reviewing our notes, summarizing the chapters and teasing out the main ideas or most important "take aways" from each chapter. This allowed the student a chance to synthesis all they have been learning about energy. We ended the week with a fun experiment about heat conductors and insulators.

Reading/Writing- We finished the September issue of Storyworks. After reading a play called "The Mighty Hercules"students were asked to write thorough and detailed responses to comprehension questions. Many of these questions required the students to flex their inferential thinking muscles, diving beneath the surface of the text to infer their own understanding. This is not an easy task for many fifth graders and we will be working on this throughout the year.

Word Work/ Mega Words- Now that keyboarding has wrapped up we are able to spend time on spelling, grammar and writing conventions. You may have noticed the MegaWords Two book on your kitchen table. We will be using this book, as well as other resources and curricula to become better spellers, more accurate writers and vocabulary stars!

Believe it or not the Moodle site for the math enrichment problems from the Sidwell Friends school has already been updated.

I hope you all had a chance to browse the packet over the weekend and perhaps even log on to the site!

Cheers to merrier math minds!
