We had an exciting visit to the Middle School yesterday. The staff at the Middle School were impressed by the incoming 6th graders! The 5th graders got a brief view of what Middle School is like. Each 5th grader was given a book to read over the summer as part of their summer reading requirement. Along with the book, they received a letter containing information on how to complete their summer reading requirement. Please take a moment to go over this with your child. This information will also be posted, at a later date, on the Blake website.
Math
In math this week we started our unit on Algebra. The students are really enjoying algebra and are quite the mathematicians. They learned how to recognize, write and evaluate simple algebraic expressions, simplify algebraic expressions in one variable, and are working on collecting like terms to simplify algebraic expressions. We will finish our Algebra unit next week, and take our Algebra test the week of May 27th.
Science
We wrapped up our Human Development unit in science on Thursday. They were enthusiastic participants during our class discussions. They seemed quite comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts and feelings. Please take a moment talk about what they learned and answer any questions they may have after processing some of our group discussions.
Writing
In writing we began our final writing project of the year. We're creating a "Buddy Book" for our kindergarten buddies. Each 5th grader is writing a fairytale for their buddy that includes their buddy as one of the main characters. We have been working on them at school, but the majority of work has been homework. Please help them edit their story at home. We will give our "Buddy Books" to our buddies on our last day together. I am impressed at what creative writers we have in our classroom. Their stories are fantastic! What a special gift to give their buddy.
Have a wonderful weekend!
