A Cold Week in Review
It has been a chilly week outside but we managed to keep warm with a multitude of activities in fifth grade!
This week in math we began our ratio chapter. We will be exploring ratios from now until spring break. This week we learned about finding and comparing ratios. We created "family" ratios, which the kids enjoyed!
"there are 2 adults to 3 kids in my family"- a 2:3 ratio
"there are 2 people who like meat to 2 people who do not" -a 2:2 ratio
"in my family there are 3 animals to 4 humans" -a 3:4 ratio
Chapter six Area of a Triangle assessments will be going home in Friday Folders, as well as the Human Body science test. This was an open note test, possibly the first of it's kind for these kiddos. I think they all learned that while being able to use your notes to answer some questions is great, it does not mean that EVERYTHING asked of you on the test will be in your notes, studying is still required! It was a good learning experience in more ways than one!
Your children have been working hard preparing to lead their conference for you next week. They are diligently reflecting on themselves as students, friends, mathematicians, social scientists, readers and writers. I am proud of them, as I know you will be too!
This week we deepened our understanding of our identities by thinking about our values and beliefs. We discussed how what is important to us and what we care deeply about can be a part of our identity, just like our race, religion, birth order and interests. Our values and what we hold dear helps us answer the question, " Who Am I?"
Using an audio essay from NPR's podcast, "This I Believe", students created their own list of 30 beliefs. They are powerful and thoughtfully crafted.
