BOOK CLUBS
We have been busy delving into our book club books. Students are enjoying the various titles, writing thoughtful summaries on their various assignments and coming to book club meetings prepared with probing questions, observations and reactions. I would whole heartily recommend all of these titles even to adult readers. They are well written and bring to light important issues facing children in our world. Having a common language of a shared text with your fifth grader reader is a wonderful way to connect and facilitate important conversations.

Science
How many muscles are used to say just one word, how about to take one single step?
How do muscles and bones work together so that we can move?
Is your elbow a hinge or a pivot joint?
Your scientists should know the answers to these question, go ahead...quiz em'!
Math
This week students are continuing their work on how to multiply fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. We had fun working with real-world problems. Students worked to carefully read the real life scenarios and pick out the fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers that were important to accurately solve the problems. This is not an easy task, especially when working with two-step problems. In addition we began to work on dividing fractions by whole numbers and talking about reciprocal number relationships.
