Happy Valentines Day...Week in Review
During MATH this week we moved through three important lessons. Students are continuing to understand how to multiply fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. We had fun working with real-world problems in lesson 4.5. Students worked to carefully read the real life scenarios and pick out the fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers that were important to accurately solve the problems. This is not an easy task, especially when working with two-step problems. We will be taking the chapter test the week of February 24th. I will communicate the exact date when it has been firmed up!
We wrapped up our human body unit in SCIENCE this week. The students did a wonderful job with both the short answer/fill in the blank portion of the test given on Monday and the hands-on joint model building on Thursday. It was thrilling to see them become human body enthusiasts.
In WRITING we finished our February writing reflection on the importance of reading. Students brainstormed three reasons they felt reading was important. These three reasons were then expanded into thoroughly developed paragraphs. We continue to work on topic sentences as a road map for the reader. Students are better understanding how to group like ideas into cohesive paragraphs. We continue to work on CAREFULLY editing. Students are being held to the "Fifth Grade Writing Convention Expectations" for all final pieces of writing.
On Wednesday we went to the play, "The Mitten" at Stages Theater in Hopkins. This was a fun experience to share with our Kindergarten buddies. It was sweet to see the fifth graders usher their buddies to their seats, go with them to the bathroom and remind them about proper bus behavior!
