Keep Calm and Make It To Winter Break.....

I suppose this tag line makes things sound dire, that is far from the case! Things are going well in fifth grade, we had a great week, however, winter break excitement is surely setting in!

Fractions: We are rockin' and rollin' with our fraction study. I am really happy with the students progress and hard work. They are quickly catching on to these new concepts. Next week will we be working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and solving real world fraction problems.
A REMINDER- We are continuing to test students on their math facts once a month. PLEASE continue to support your students as they practice their multiplication and division facts at home!

Social Studies: It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of our government unit. We will be having a unit test on Wednesday, Dec. 18th. We will have ample time to study in class on Monday and Tuesday, however some studying at home will be necessary. Students should use their text books, chapter notes and their government "maps" as a study tools.

Read Aloud : We started a new read aloud book at the end of last week, The Lions of Little Rock, by Kristen Levine. Here is a quick summary of the story: As twelve-year-old Marlee starts middle school in 1958 Little Rock, it feels like her whole world is falling apart. Until she meets Liz, the new girl at school. Liz is everything Marlee wishes she could be: she's brave, brash and always knows the right thing to say. But when Liz leaves school without even a good-bye, the rumor is that Liz was caught passing for white. Marlee decides that doesn't matter. She just wants her friend back. And to stay friends, Marlee and Liz are even willing to take on segregation and the dangers their friendship could bring to both their families .I make a consented effort to read a wide range of diverse books during this special class time. I chose this book, as it is nicely connects with our government unit (understanding the supreme courts role in historical cases that have helped to precipitate important change).

Indoor Recess: I have a set of troopers on my hands! With these very cold temperatures, we have had many indoor recesses this week. While getting fresh air and running around is much more desirable for everyone, the kids were flexible and understanding, getting cozy with classroom games and conversations.

Math in Focus Moodle Page for Parents: I am excited to share that the Math in Focus Moodle page is up and running. I have been exploring this page and think it has some very helpful resources. I encourage you to explore this page, as there are many resources to help you better understand the Math in Focus program, in addition to many student resources; both enrichment and extension work and fact practice. * I cannot put the log in information in the blog, but have sent it to you all in an email!
