Greetings on a Chilly Thursday

As a snowy Thursday evening descends and a COLD weekend is on the horizon, I will keep my weekly notes brief. I am in the thick of report card writing, and while it is a very involved and time consuming job (hence the briefer blog post) it is an aspect of the job that I truly enjoy. I appreciate the time to reflect on the growth and learning of your children. I always feel like at the end of the process I know them all just a bit better!

Math Tests Have Landed!
It feels as if we have scaled Everest in the last week or two! The students took the Chapter Two test (Whole Number Multiplication and Division) and the Cumulative Review for Chapters One and Two.

Both tests are coming home in Friday Folders. The Chapter Two test is scored with a simple percentage. The Cumulative Review is accompanied by a "Skill Set Scorecard." Information on how to best interpret the test accompanies the skill set scores. Please read it carefully.

As you can see for yourself, it was a very thorough test and by no means a walk in the park! As a class, the students are thriving in our new math program and this is proof. Does it mean it is effortless? Certainly not! Does it mean skills and concepts are perfected immediately? No, not at all! It means we are all working hard, grappling, and eventually succeeding.

***Please take some time to celebrate your student's efforts. I am!***

Friday Folders

A quick note about Friday Folders. School work that has been grader or reviewed is sent home weekly in Friday Folders. It is an important communication tool ( although not as high-tech as the blog) and a simple way to get work back to the students. PLEASE take time each weekend to look over the contents and share it with your children. It is imperative that they are looking over their graded work, to see both the celebrations and the constructive feedback on their work, in order to learn and make progress.

Cold Temperatures Arrive
As the winter weather comes, all students are required to wear snow boots, snow pants, hats and gloves at recess and at carpool. Students who are not dressed appropriately for the cold weather at carpool will be asked to wait in the office for their parents. This is a matter of safety and health. Thank you for your cooperation.

Homework Help from 8:00 to 8:15
Ms. Senum is available at morning Extended Day to help with specific homework questions. This isn't a lot of time, so please be clear that she is available to us pretty much all day in fifth grade, and her help can be invaluable.

**Check out the videos below. We enjoyed watching these fun and silly videos, as we learned about the Preamble and the three branches of government.
